Wednesday: GLBT Short Films
'Hit the High Notes' at Miami Short Film Festival

By Dan Renzi, | Nov. 19 at 10:21 AM | drenzi@expressgaynews.com

The Miami Short Film Festival--a small but mighty presentation of artsy short films (hence the name)--presents a special showing tonight of GLBT selections, in a collection called "Hit the High Notes."  The films include a documentary about a Cuban transvestite in Havana, "Tacones Cercano"; a "sock opera" from Canada titles "The Perfect Match"; and selections from France, Colombia, and a few U.S. flicks.

Tower Theater, 1508 SW 8th St., in Little Havana.  $12.  And while you're there, walk west a little bit and get a snack at El Pub, which is a Little Havana landmark of cheap eats.  Delicioso.

Tonight: 1,000 Homosexuals
Crazy comedy opens at Arsht Center in Miami

By Dan Renzi, | Nov. 19 at 8:24 AM | drenzi@expressgaynews.com

There has been much hype surrounding "1,000 Homosexuals" at the Arsht Center in Miami—we have yet to see the production, so we can't offer our opinion—but the local community is embracing the production, encouraging everyone and anyone to atted.  "1,000 Homosexuals" is a spoof on the Anita Bryant days in South Florida, who crusaded against gay rights in this state and the nation as a whole.  But in this show, the tables are turned, and poor Anita is the victim!  Apparently hilarity ensues.

The show runs through Sunday only; info is here.

Hillary Clinton will accept Secretary of State role?
Report comes after news that Obama will also call upon McCain for assistance

By Dan Renzi, | Nov. 19 at 7:41 AM | drenzi@expressgaynews.com

According to The Guardian--because where else would Americans go for their news, other than an paper in England--Hillary Clinton has in fact been offered the job of Secretary of State, and she does plan on accepting the offer.

The news comes after much speculation and excited tail-wagging by Clinton fans, although she has yet to formally announce her decision. Of course, we're huge fans of The Hills here, so this news is quite exciting.  Ms. Clinton has a way of making people do what she wants, and we can easily see her stomping around the world, making it a better place.

Tuesday: Free Martinis!
Martini Tuesdays throws a party and you're invited!

By Dan Renzi, | Nov. 18 at 11:17 AM | drenzi@expressgaynews.com

Tonight the liquor will flow freely in South Beach, when Edison Farrow serves free martinis all night--get on down to The Webster Temporary, at 919 Collins Ave, in Miami Beach.  The Webster is a cute little Art Deco hotel, so this should be nice.

This comes after the end of the Martini Tuesday bowling leagues, which ended at the beginning of the month, so Edison is ushering in a new vibe for the party.  Should be fun.  Did we mention the martinis are free?  They're free!

'Tru Loved' opens Friday
Gay teen indie film at Gateway Sunrise

By Dan Renzi, | Nov. 18 at 9:13 AM | drenzi@expressgaynews.com

"Tru Loved," the drama/comedy on gay teen life in California, opens this weekend at the Gateway Cinemas in Fort Lauderdale.  Reviews have been, well, somewhat tepid--read the Rotten Tomatoes rating here--but this is independent film, and you take the good with the bad.  Bruce Vilanch makes an appearance, although his physica appearance has become just as much a topic of discussion as his actual performance.

Gay rights rallies nationwide
Thousands protest anti-gay laws around the US

By Dan Renzi, | Nov. 16 at 10:57 PM | drenzi@expressgaynews.com

Protestors in three South Florida cities joined the National Day of Protests on Saturday, Nov. 15, to speak out against the wave of anti-gay laws passed in the 2008 election.  Large crowds--surprising to some people, as such big crowds gathered for a protest organized with little prior notice--gathered at the steps of city halls in Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Lake Worth, holding signs and cheering their support.  In Miami Beach, a sole anti-gay activist stood on the opposite side of the street (by police orders, to keep the crowds separate) and condemned the protestors, which seemed only to energize the crowd more.

National Day of Protest
Anger spreads nationwide over anti-gay laws passed on Nov. 4

By Dan Renzi, | Nov. 15 at 12:00 AM | drenzi@expressgaynews.com

This Saturday, November 15, 2008, there will be a simultaneous national protest to bring to the forefront the injustice during the recent general elections concerning gay marriage.

In the 2008 election, the states of Florida, California and Arizona adopted measures that prohibit gay marriage, and in the case of California, take away rights from gay men and lesbians.

Florida’s legislation, “marriage protection” Amendment 2, changes the Florida state constitution to specify marriage, domestic partnerships, or any sort of legal recognition of relationships may only be between one man and one woman.

After the passage of anti-gay amendments and laws across the country, thousands of people have protested daily across the country to demand legal equality. Californians have been protesting nonstop since their constitutional amendment passed.

Those protests have become organized into a national movement today, with the National Day of Protest—in South?Florida, local rallies will be held  today at 1:30 p.m.:

Fort Lauderdale?City Hall
100 N. Andrews?Ave. bishop@bishopmahee.com

Lake Worth City Hall
